What a Windshield Repair Actually Does
A laminated windshield is two layers of glass bonded to a plastic interlayer. When a rock hits it, the outer layer breaks and air fills the void, which is why the damage looks bright and silvery. A repair pulls that air out under vacuum and injects a curable resin that bonds the broken glass back together.
The purpose is to restore strength and stop the damage from spreading. Appearance improves, often substantially, but a repaired chip usually remains faintly visible up close. Anyone promising an invisible result is overselling it.
Repairs are quick. Most take 30 minutes or less, and the vehicle can be driven immediately afterward.
What Qualifies for Repair
Repairability comes down to size, depth, location, and contamination. Chips roughly the size of a quarter or smaller and short cracks are the usual candidates. Damage outside the driver's direct line of sight is preferred, because even a good repair leaves some distortion.
Damage that reaches the edge of the glass is a poor candidate, since that area carries structural load. Damage that has been open for months and filled with dirt, wax, or water will not bond as well, which is the practical reason to handle a chip in the first week rather than the first season.

How long does a chip repair take?
Most repairs are done in about 20 to 30 minutes, and you can drive right away once the resin is cured.
Is a repaired windshield as strong as a new one?
A proper repair restores a large share of the strength lost at the break and prevents further spreading. It is not identical to undamaged glass, which is one reason location and size matter so much when deciding whether to repair.
How long can I wait before repairing a chip?
Sooner is better. Dirt, car wash detergent, and moisture all contaminate the break, and every cold morning is another chance for the chip to run. A chip handled in the first week has the best chance of a clean result.
Can you repair a crack, not just a chip?
Short cracks are sometimes repairable depending on length, location, and whether they reach the edge. Long cracks and anything running across the driver's view call for replacement.
